Tom Palmer, auteur van If You’re Proud to Be a Leeds Fan<\/i>, vertelt in The Bookseller<\/i> (30 augustus) hoe hij het afgelopen jaar voetbal heeft gebruikt om het lezen te promoten en een nieuwe lezersgroep aan te boren. Zo organiseerde hij samen met een sportcentrum in West Yorkshire een klein festival met als thema ‘schrijven over sport’. Er traden auteurs op, er werden gedichten gelezen en de plaatselijke bibliotheek presenteerde boeken. Het doel werd gehaald: sportfans – vooral jongens en mannen – kwamen naar een boekenfestival.\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 De bibliotheek in Bradford heeft een lees- en schrijfgroep over voetbal opgericht. De bijeenkomsten worden niet in de bibliotheek gehouden, maar in een caf\u00e9. Acht mannen komen eens per veertien dagen bij elkaar om over voetbalboeken te praten. Bijna allemaal zijn ze serieus aan het schrijven geslagen.\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 Binnenkort start er een voetbal-leestournee getiteld Booked! in Manchester, Leeds, Liverpool, Sheffield en Middlesbrough. De deelnemers kunnen in de bars van sportcentra een debat bijwonen tussen een plaatselijke sportjournalist en een beroemde voetballer waarbij reclame wordt gemaakt voor een nieuw boek. Onderdeel van Booked! zijn lees- en schrijfgroepen over voetbal en een website. Doel is nieuw publiek te trekken dat zich in een bibiotheek of boekwinkel slecht op zijn gemak voelt.
